Story Behind the Invention
Having been an all-around athlete as a kid, Gary Davis chose to follow the one thing he loved the most at the time – football. He went to college to pursue two lifelong goals. The first was to become a professional football player in the NFL and the second was to develop and oversee a rehabilitation program for juvenile offenders.
Gary went to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, which was not a “football factory” for getting players into the NFL, but that did not deter him. As an asthmatic coming from a small university, it took a lot of work to fulfill his dream. After he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1976, it opened the door for others to make it to the pros from that university. He was able to compete with the best athletes in the world and play under the legendary Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history. After playing in Miami for several years, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
While playing in the NFL, Gary took every opportunity to work toward his second goal. After his first off season, he went back to Cal Poly and completed his degree in Social Sciences. In the following off seasons, he worked with law enforcement and the prison system. This helped him develop his program for juvenile offenders. After he retired from football, Gary opened a camp and directed it for five years. He then took a position with a non-profit organization and a Department of Education program that provided counseling services to prison inmates and their families.
During college, he was introduced to freshwater fishing, and would go as often as he could. After he retired from the NFL, he got into ocean fishing and has been an avid fisherman ever since. Gary was inspired to develop the FHP Fishing Hook Protectors following an injury to one of his fingers after getting punctured by a fishing hook. It was so severe it sent him to the ER. He was then motivated to develop a product for his safety and the safety of the fishing nation. Coach Shula’s philosophy was to prepare for all phases of the game prior to the game and not deviate from the plan. This invention is part of his game plan for a safe and successful fishing experience.
